Impurity is in your head!!
“You know what, that girl asked me C mil gaya? All I could say was nahi, C ban gaya, and there the three of them stood laughing”.
She chuckled, as I was telling her story about my recent visit to Jaipur due to official work. “Why are you so much into girls these days?” she asked. “It’s the weather”, I reasoned out, perfectly ready with the answer.
“Last time I went to Jaipur, I was with these friends of mine and they asked us to go to Raj Mandir, I really thought Raj Mandir was a temple, but it’s actually a cinema hall”, she sat down as we agreed on taking another metro, since the one in front of us was too crowded. “I was on periods” she added. At first, it sounded to me like she was on periods and hence couldn’t go, because the body might not be at its best at those times (which usually my female friends tell) and with constant mood swings, energy is on a downward slope. But then something bothered me. “Why? Didn’t you go to a presumed temple due to periods?” I asked.
“Yeah, you know girls are impure when they are on periods” she added. I was in total shock!
“What??? Are you mad? Being on periods makes a girl impure?” I couldn’t digest what she had just told me. Wtf did I just hear from a women, 25 years old, well studied in a good private school and working in one of the most young and enthusiastic cities in the world, Delhi? No way!
I know this girl since three years. Earlier, she used to talk about voodoo, nazar lagna, souls entering bodies, black magic and lots of things and personally I hated it. Most of the times, I used to question her conventional thoughts which usually led to heated debates followed by months of not talking to each other. She stopped discussing. I stopped sulking.
But wait. Did I just hear her say girls are impure when on periods? I couldn’t control myself. “Which century are you living in, madam? How can you call a girl impure when on periods? It’s a natural thing!!!” I couldn’t believe and hence started questioning again. “You don’t have to go through periods, you won’t understand” she said.
Ok. Let’s pause for a second. I am a male. Yes. My body works in a different way than a female because of certain natural way of, don’t know what to call it, but it’s the way a male body is. It has different functions so it may or may not go through what a female body goes through, which also has its own functions. It’s natural. Our body has to make sure it’s working fine, and hence it does lots of things. It breathes, throws out urine & solid waste, sweats, creates fluids that make up for semen, goes on periods (menstruation) and does so many things on its own.
“How can you even say this? Where are you living yaar? What thinking is this? I don’t get periods doesn’t mean I don’t know what they are. I have studied bio too. I know why it happens. I can’t take what you just said!” I was at my shocked best! “We fight for issues like these, like women not being allowed to pray, and you are saying this?”
“No, girls are impure on periods. It’s always said. Aisa hi hota h” she sounded firm.
“Why? Because your religion said so?”I wasn’t going to take this anymore. We walked into the metro with a brief pause but my face was as astonished as a man who has just been punched with hands tied at the back. “Yes. It’s there in the religion. When they say it’s impure, how can you question my thinking?” Her voice became louder as much as my questions.
“So you mean out of those 100 religions, 99 are wrong and only yours is right? Other religions don’t say that, but only yours is right?” I wasn’t going to stop until she gave me a stare with “please” coming out of her mouth like a sword. I wasn’t scared, but knowing that this is the person I don’t want to be with at that moment, I stepped back. “Now this is backward thinking” were my last words to her.
She just called a girl impure, being on periods, being a girl herself. Why? A young, abled, independently earning woman calling periods as impure makes me wonder that if such is the condition in cities, where we are supposed to be liberal in our thoughts and minds, improve society where men and women live equally as human beings, care for our planet, our children and us, then we can consider villages as total chaos. Where would this thought of hers fit? Women are not allowed to enter temples during menstruation is a stupid practice in itself. If your religion says that god created you, then he gave you periods as well. So did he made you impure and asked the men to make a rule where you can’t worship him when on periods? Oh yes, you are the only ones who said all men are god’s children. Right, you mean women aren’t? This god must die and so must your idiotic regressive thought process.
More importantly, it’s not about my rant against the religion. It’s against you. Considering yourself as impure? Your own kind as impure? For what’s natural, you considered it impure? I felt as if you abused millions of women in one single word today. Education vs studies, eh?
