Life's Little Surprises
" रोको रोको ! साइड में लगा लो !" (Stop! Stop! Park it on the other side)
I exclaimed with my eyes popping out at the sight of two bikers flying and crashing on the road, just a car's length away from us. I had to stop for help.
Let me rewind the story.
It had been a pretty normal Saturday while I sat working my ass of off with 3 back to back presentations to be sent. I was short on time since we were supposed to leave by 12 or 1 in the night to Ranipokhari, Uttarakhand. I had to go out for some work to Delhi and while I rushed back home on my 14 year old bitch who is doing just fine, it started to rain. Never before I had experienced a rain where droplets were pricking the skin, trying to pierce off every square inch of surface they fell on. It felt like a 1000 needles raining from the sky. In fact, it pricked my lip so hard that I got a cut over it and a one and half drop of blood came out in no time. Somehow, I reached home and opened the laptop to finish off my work, did all the research, sent two out of 3 presentations only to realize it was already 11 30 PM and an impatient Rajat waiting outside my home in his car. I packed my bag in 3 minutes or less and left in just a t-shirt and shorts (no Jockey beneath !!)
The trip we began in that old Chevy Beat that has surely taken a lot of BEATing because of our hunger for jungle expeditions, was initially planned as a bike trip on Rajat's Avenger. I had been thinking of a long bike ride since months now and we really wished to test Avenger's capabilities in terms of long rides. Plan got changed with Shivam & Shivam opting out and hence nobody but Rajat, me and his driver Raju bhaiya were left. Kuldeep, Rajat's friend, wanted a lot of Bhagwat Geetas distributed at a little religious ceremony at his home (where we were going) and none of that could have gone with us had we been on a bike. Which I think was okay. I didn't rebel either.
Probably everything before this incident was normal. A smooth drive, snoring Rajat, soothing songs, blabbering Raju Bhaiya, a semi-asleep-semi-awake me and a long road that was gradually taking us there until we entered a rough patch on the road with slow traffic, at about 1 30 AM. All I remember is that I turned my head towards the left window and saw something which jolted me up in one tent of a second!
Two bikers crashed! Right there, the pillion catapulted over the rider and both flew straight onto the stones, crashing face first. All three of us stopped the car immediately, got out to help with a few others joining in. That scene when I saw them flying and crashing was echoing continuously in my head.
We turned both the boys on their back only to find one's face had been smashed so bad that blood was all over it while the other, somehow sat up but couldn't understand anything due to the sudden shock. I kept my eyes struck to the one whose faced was done up badly. Is he dead? Is he about to die? Is that real blood? Am I really scared? I bent down & covered his face with a cloth so that dust doesn't stick on. We had called 108 by then, help was coming and the Police was informed too.
I kept watching this guy's face wondering why am I not feeling even a little driven, scared, hurt or intimidated. A few days ago, I had cried my heart out due to my masi's passing away. And now, this boy laid in front of me, moving a little and I watched like I was indifferent.
Everything was a little okay until we turned to see the condition of their bike. We were stunned!
It was an Avenger...
Rajat & I had nothing but a really big question mark on our faces. We were supposed to take the same road, the same bike and the same no of people while our plan changed. It felt like we saw ourselves crash. He was calm while telling everyone that Avenger is a little hard to control when on rough patches but all I was feeling was if we somehow exchanged situations with those boys. It could have easily been us.
I had no answer. I really had no words to muster.
The boys were taken in the ambulance and that was it.

Moral of the Story - We did avert fate. It somehow could have been us but things just went on with some other guys. They were drunk, drove fast and hadn't informed their families. We wouldn't have done that but yet, it could have been us crashing and ending up with our lives at stake. These are nothing but life changing situations. Some people don't get a chance to survive, some do. They chose to ride, fell and escaped death by fortune. Their lives will change once they will be conscious.
Making your choices isn't bad, You just have to be brave enough to accept them, even if they are wrong. Life is all about crashing and moving on. Nobody wants to crash, but what if you did? It was your choice to be on that bike, isn't it? Will you stop riding? No. Learn and move on. There will be new accidents but at least you wont crash on a rough patch again!!
